RACE DAY TOP TIPS

  • RACE PACKS WILL NOT BE DELIVERED BY POST, THEY ARE TO BE PICKED UP FROM THE CARDIFF SPORTS EXPO BEFORE THE RACE (UNTIL 11AM ON SAT 26TH MARCH).
  • YOUR RACE NUMBER WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU 2-3 WEEKS BEFORE THE RACE.
  • ADIDAS FINISHER T-SHIRTS ARE IN MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SIZES. MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS ON THE DAY TO MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT SIZE
  • THE ELITE MEN AND MASS RACE STARTS AT 14:10 ON CASTLE STREET. STARTING PENS OPEN AT 13:15 AND THE ELITE WOMEN’S RACE STARTS AT 13:35
  • ROAD COSURES WILL BE IN PLACE AROUND THE COURSE FROM 12:30PM. MAKE SURE YOU GIVE YOURSELF ENOUGH TIME TO GET INTO THE CITY.

 

RACE DAY CHECKLIST

RACE TIMES AND WELCOMING CEREMONY

The elite men and mass race will start at 14:10pm on Easter Saturday 26th March. The elite women’s race will start at 13:35. Both races start on Castle Street. Late starters will not be permitted to take part.

All starting pens will open at 13:15, with an official Welcoming Ceremony starting at 13:45.

 

GETTING TO THE START LINE

Please make sure you arrive in plenty of time before the start of the race. Starting pens will open at 13:15, 55 minutes before the start of the race. Please refer to the instructions and start map detailed in the ‘Getting to the Start’ section for detail on how to fill into your correct pen colour.

 

COLLECTING YOUR RACE PACK

Your race pack and race number WILL NOT be posted to you in advance of the race. Instead it needs to be collected in person from the registration desks at the Cardiff Sports Expo  at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, CF10 2EQ, from Thursday the 24th March until Saturday 26th March between the times highlighted in red below. Please note that race packs must be collected by 11am on the day of the race.

You race pack will include your official race number and timing chip (attached to the back of the number), along with a welcome letter, spectator guide, official programme and drawstring adidas duffle bag which can be used at the event baggage area on race day.

You will receive your official running number in an email two-three weeks before event day. You will then need to bring this email with you to the registration desk which matches your race number along with a valid photo ID on the day of collection (eg valid passport or driving licence with photograph). If you do not own a passport or driver license, please bring another form of photographic ID together with your signed bank card and a recent utility bill for your registered address.

If you are unable to collect your race pack in person, you may send a friend or fellow runner with a letter of authority to pick up your pack for you.

We encourage runners to pick up their packs before the morning of the race to avoid queues and to ensure that you have your race number before the day. Parking is limited nearby so please consider travelling by public transport. The Motorpoint Arena is easily accessible by foot from the city centre and a 2-minute walk from Queen Street Station.

 

GOODY BAG COLLECTION

At the IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships you will not receive a goody bag at the end of the race. Instead these items are to be collected from the goody bag collection points located alongside the registration desks at the Cardiff Sports Expo. You will only be allowed entry into this area once you have collected your race pack.

PLEASE NOTE: Once you have passed through this area you will not be allowed to return.

 

EVENT ENQUIRIES

All event queries can be answered at the event help desk at the Cardiff Sports Expo. The event help desk will operate on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th March between 10:00 and 20:00, and between 09:00 and 17:00 on Saturday the 26th March.

If our main help desk is not convenient, on race day we will also have a number of event information hubs situated at Cardiff City Hall and Cardiff Bay which will be able to answer many queries relating to race day.

RUNNER NUMBER AND TIMING CHIP

Your timing chip will be attached to the runner number contained within your official race pack.

Please remember to bring your runner number with you on the day as these cannot be re-issued.

Please ensure your runner number is safely and clearly pinned to the FRONT of your vest or t-shirt.

If you do not have any safety pins to attach your number, there will be a supply (whilst stocks last) at the registration desks.

YOU MUST FILL IN YOUR EMERGENCY DETAILS ON THE BACK OF YOUR NUMBER.

Please note: failure to wear your runner number across the starting mat will mean your time will not be recorded. Do not bend or otherwise damage the chip, otherwise the timing chip may not work.

 

STARTING PENS

Your official race number features a central block of colour which corresponds with your estimated time and allocated starting pen. Please assemble within the clearly signposted colour-coded pens near the start line on Castle Street.

Colours are as follows:

Sub 1:15    White (numbers 1-400) (sponsored by Cardiff University)

Sub 1:30    White (numbers 401-2500) (sponsored by Cardiff University)                       

Sub 1:45    White (sponsored by Cardiff University)         

Sub 2:00    Green (sponsored by adidas)

Sub 2:15    Red (sponsored by Canon)          

Over 2:15+   Yellow (sponsored by Seiko)

To find out how to access your allocated pen, please refer to the Getting To The Start Line section of the pre-race information programme sent out in March which includes a detailed map.

For safety reasons, runners must assemble in the correct colour pen. Runners may move backwards a pen colour, but they will not be allowed to move forward a pen colour in order to avoid dangerous congestion at the front of the race.

Please allow enough time to walk to the start and assemble before the race. Pens will open at 13:15, with a start line entertainment programme starting at 13:45.

The race will have a staggered wave start to ensure that all runners cross the start line as safely as possible.

 

BAGGAGE AREA

All runners are allowed to deposit one bag which must display your baggage label which is attached to your runner number. Your free adidas duffle bag could also be used in the baggage tents. There is space on the bag to write your number in marker pen. Pens will be available at the baggage tents.

For security reasons, you MUST display your runner number when depositing your bag.

Bags can be collected after the race upon the display of your runner number. Only runners and staff will have access to this area.

The baggage tent is situated on Museum Avenue, please refer to the baggage map and instruction page in this brochure for further detail of how to get there. The baggage tent will be open from 12.00 noon on race day.

Items not collected after baggage closure at 19.00 will be taken to the Run 4 Wales offices for safe keeping. Please contact the events team to arrange collection or enquire about any lost items at cardiff2016@run4wales.org or on 029 2166 0790

It is strongly advised that you leave valuables at home. Race organisers cannot be held responsible if items go missing or are damaged. We will do our utmost to safeguard your baggage, but the area is not secured.

 

RACE PACERS

Race pacers will assemble at the front of each starting pen wearing sail flags that correspond to your runner number colour/estimated finish time. They are a friendly bunch and there to enhance your experience so look out for them and say hello! Many thanks to the experienced runners who have agreed to be pacers for this year’s race.

 

RACE SAFETY AND MEDICAL SERVICES

If at any time during the race you feel unable to continue, please stop, rest and locate the nearest marshal for advice.

Medical teams will be on hand around the course as well as at the start and finish areas. The primary medical tent is reserved for the most severe cases and patients who need urgent attention. This tent is situated directly at the finish line.

A secondary medical tent which will deal with walking wounded and injuries of less immediate concern will be situated on City Hall Road a few hundred meters from the finish line.

IT IS VITAL that you ensure the medical information on the back of your runner number has been completed. It is your responsibility to inform the organisers if you have any special medical conditions.

In the unlikely event of a major incident, the Race Director and emergency services have the right to:

  • Alter or shorten the route, but still provide a race if possible
  • Stop the race at any time if deemed necessary

This would be in circumstances beyond the control of race organisers and no refunds would be given.

 

FINISH LINE AND COMMEMORATIVE ITEMS

After finishing the race, please move quickly through the finish line to avoid causing congestion. Medical staff will be on hand for anyone who feels unwell or needs medical attention. After the finish line all runners will receive a World Championship medal, adidas t-shirt, High5 energy gel, water and banana. Goody bag items are to be collected from the Cardiff Sports Expo at race pack collection.

 

ADIDAS FINISHERS T-SHIRT

All participants will receive a technical adidas finishers t-shirt after crossing the finish line.

Available in men’s and ladies’ sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL), t-shirts are given out on a first-come-first-served basis. T-shirts are ordered according to the sizes outlined by participants when registering, but please note that we cannot always guarantee you receive the correct t-shirt size requested if others change their original choice on the day.

Please look for the signs and listen to the instructions of the race supervisors and volunteers to ensure you pick up your correct size as you will not be able to return into the post-race finish area once you have exited.

A size guide will be available at the Cardiff Sports Expo and also on our website. Please check the guidelines before the race.

 

PRESENTATION CEREMONY

The flower ceremony for the IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships will be conducted near the finish line and broadcast live on the two big screens near the finish line.

 

PHYSIOTHERAPY

Cardiff University Physiotherapy Clinic will be providing physiotherapy services both before and after the race. The service is free for all participants and is the perfect place to massage any pre-race niggles or work away the aches and pains after the race.

Over 30 physio beds will be available at the Cardiff Sports Expo until Saturday morning before the race at the Expo, and until 6:30pm at the City Hall Celebration Zone after the race.

 

TOILET AND SHOWER FACILITIES

There will be several banks of toilets around the Civic Centre and on the way to the start, including:

  • On King Edward V11 Avenue, outside the
    Law Courts
  • On Boulevard de Nantes, outside the
    Law Courts
  • On Castle Street
  • Opposite the museum outside Gorsedd Gardens

There will be several toilets positioned within the first mile and at every water station (NB: Urination on the street will result in disqualification and a ban from future events). Race officials will be monitoring for offenders.

Shower facilities will be available at Sport Wales near Sophia Garden, a short 5-10 minute walk from the finish line on the edge of Bute Park. A £1 charitable donation will be charged.

 

LOST PROPERTY AND UNWANTED CLOTHES

Any lost property found at the event will be taken to the Event Info Hub at City Hall & Cardiff Bay.

Every effort will be made to return any lost items by Run 4 Wales. If you lose something on race day, please contact Run 4 Wales on cardiff2016@run4wales.org or 02921 660790.

 

SPECTATORS

When watching the race please be aware of the course and stay behind barriers at all times. Crossing points will be managed throughout the course, but when none are available, please avoid crossing in front of runners, and cross when there are no runners on the road.

There are a number of brilliant locations around the route to watch the race, but please take care at all times.

Where to watch the race?

– Finishing straight at mile 13: Spectator Zones will be available for you to watch the conclusion of the race. A big screen showing the whole race will also be available.

– Cathays Terrace: Watch the runners as they complete their final mile into the finish and push for the best position possible.

– City Centre Celebration Zone: We’ll have a big screen in the middle of the city for the public to watch the entire race.

– Roath Park Lake at mile 10 and 11: A great opportunity to watch the runners twice as they loop around the lake and speed toward the finish.

Cardiff Bay Celebration Zone: Watch the race live and on our big screen whilst also enjoying our sports activities and SEIKO sprint zone.

 

ROAD RE-OPENING

There will be a rolling road closure in operation along the course.

The majority of roads will reopen three hours after the start at 5pm. If there are still runners on the course they will be asked to continue on the pavements to allow the roads to be re-opened. There will be signage and marshals still in place as the roads re-open to help guide anyone who needs to transfer to the pavement.

MEETING POINTS

Meeting points will be positioned in the City Hall Post-Race Celebration Zone in front of City Hall.

We recommend this location as the best place to reunite with friends and family after the race and also to meet with other runners before the race and the pen-filling process.

Please refer to the ‘Getting To The Start Line’ and ‘Baggage and Finish Line’ sections in the pre-race information programme sent out at the start of March for a map of the location.

 

LOST CHILDREN

If you have lost a child or find a lost child on event day, please report it as soon as possible to the nearest event steward, volunteer, security staff or police personnel. Alternatively report to one of the Event Info hubs in front of City Hall or in Cardiff Bay.

 

DRINKS AND ENERGY GELS

Brecon Carreg water will be available to runners at four water stations around the course and also at the finish. These water station are outline on the official course map.

A High5 energy gel will also be provided just before the 6 mile point outside the Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay.

It is not recommended to use an energy gel or an unfamiliar brand of gel on race day without prior use.

Photographs will be taken at the race, which you will be able to purchase from our official photographers Marathon Photos (www.marathon-photos.com).
