IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships 2016

NOMINATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED

YOUR CHANCE TO SECURE A FREE SPACE AT THIS PRESTIGIOUS EVENT

Athletics for a Better World (ABW) is a social responsibility programme, launched by the IAAF, the governing body for world athletics – which aims to use athletics as a tool to inspire lasting social change.

Athletics for a Better World will launch the ABW 500 at the IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships, by purchasing 500 entries worth almost £30,000. These will be distributed free of charge to people who may be thinking about running for the very first time. We would like to see people running who have never considered anything like this before or are excluded from sport due to cost, facilities, support, or who are just simply struggling with motivation.

It is part of the IAAF, event organisers and title sponsors Cardiff University’s commitment to promote running as an accessible physical activity that can improve long-term health.

The runners will also have the opportunity to take part in a research project delivered through Cardiff University. The research will monitor the progress of the runners and investigate ways to reduce injury.

See details below on how to receive a free space.

Members of the ABW 500 will all receive:

  • A free space to run in the mass race following the IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships (worth £59), where runners of all ages and abilities can run in the footsteps of champions
  • An ABW training t-shirt
  • Training plans and access to an online support network (the ABW 500 Facebook group – a great place to share training stories, ask for tips and more!)
  • Invitation to a training evening, hosted by an endurance expert offering hints and tips
  • A research questionnaire to complete and submit before training begins
  • An invite to an IAAF promotional event
  • Injury prevention videos for those who wish to take part in the research project with Cardiff University
  • 200 of the ABW500 will also be lucky enough to win a new pair of adidas Boost trainers!

Winners will also have the opportunity to take part in a Cardiff University research project, which we encourage all winners to participate in. This non-invasive study will gather data on the effects and behaviour patterns of those training for the event. It will show you the results of your training journey.

HOW TO WIN A FREE SPACE

The 500 spaces will be distributed via social media and local community groups in Wales. Make sure you’re following Cardiff 2016 on Facebook and Twitter where we’ll announce each time we release a batch of entries.

Comment on our Facebook Post if you’d like to leave yourself or somebody you know a nomination, stating a reason why they are eligible for a free space and how it could improve their health and wellbeing.

If you’d like to know more, or would rather submit your nomination by email, please contact: lee.treadwell@run4wales.org.

CLAIMING YOUR FREE SPACE

Once the 500 winners have been selected they will receive a congratulations message via email with a registration link and promotional code to claim their free space.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR A SPACE?

The initiative is an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic new runners from Wales looking to make a change in their lives and achieve a new health and fitness goal, therefore winners must have never ran a half marathon before. Winners will be checked against previous Cardiff Half Marathon results.
